Key Points

  • The author runs a GPU server with four RTX 3090 cards for research and PoCs, mainly using vLLM to test models such as Qwen, GPT-OSS, and Gemma.
  • GPU resale prices have risen substantially, and the author notes that FP8/FP4 adoption is increasing while the RTX 3090 does not support these lower-precision formats.
  • They are considering selling all four RTX 3090s to raise around $3,500, temporarily switching to cloud APIs, and later upgrading to RTX PRO 6000 if additional funds become available.
  • The post asks the community for advice on whether selling the hardware is the right move given current model/precision trends and future upgrade plans.
  • The article provides the server’s hardware specs (EPYC CPU, 4x RTX 3090, DDR4 ECC RAM, Samsung 990 PRO SSDs, and Corsair PSUs) to contextualize the decision.

I have a GPU server (4 × RTX3090s) that I've been using for research and PoC in the past 2 years. Mostly running vLLM for Qwen, GPT-OSS, and Gemma. My workflow is testing code on it where I have sudo permission, then deploy code and model on my office's servers with professional cards.

GPU prices went up a lot this year. Used RTX3090 on Ebay is around $1100. Plus, as FP8 and FP4 become more popular while RTX3090 doesn't support them, I wonder if it's time to sell.

My optimistic plan is to sell all 4 of them and get ~$3500. Use cloud API for a while. Later, if i have extra fund, upgrade to RTX PRO 6000.

Any thoughts and comments are appreciated.
