Key Points

  • A Reddit user is looking for an LLM that can perform more advanced grammar checking on private, multi-page documents, while avoiding common problems like inaccuracy, skipping text, and slow processing.
  • They are experimenting with local inference via LM Studio on a gaming laptop, sharing their hardware constraints (32GB RAM, 12GB VRAM) and typical document length (~10 pages).
  • The request is framed as a beginner-friendly recommendation ask, seeking practical guidance on which model(s) perform best for grammar-focused editing/checking in a local setup.
  • The discussion is likely to involve trade-offs between model accuracy, context length/coverage, and latency when running locally.
  • The user’s primary goal is reliable grammar checking for sensitive documents without relying on slow or unreliable tooling.

I'm trying to use an LLM for more advanced grammar checking of private documents, but a lot of the models I have found are either inaccurate, skip swaths of text, or are unbearably slow. I'm very new to using LLMs and have a gaming laptop with 32gbs of RAM and 12gbs of VRAM in a 5070ti. The documents I am trying to check are often about 10 pages long and I have been copy and pasting them into LMStudio. Does anyone have any recommendations?
