Fable 5 gone from
every claude.ai plan
Fable 5 — which Max-plan users had started moving complex tasks onto since the June 9 launch — has been removed from the model selector on claude.ai across all plans. Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5 remain available.
Max-plan users had started
moving tasks over
Fable 5 landed as Anthropic's new flagship — the model to reach for when Opus 4.8 wasn't quite enough. Max-plan users had begun migrating complex work onto it within days of the launch.
Fable 5 and Mythos 5 have been removed from the model selector on all claude.ai plan tiers. Prompts optimised specifically for Fable 5 may not produce equivalent results on Opus 4.8 without adjustment.
Default is now Opus 4.8——
for lighter work, the gap is small
Opus 4.8 was the prior best model. For chat, summarisation, translation, and standard coding, it substitutes well. For complex multi-step reasoning or workflows that were tuned on Fable 5, output quality should be re-verified.
Review any config that
pinned Fable 5 explicitly
If you set Fable 5 as a default inside a Claude Project, check whether it has automatically fallen back to Opus 4.8 and whether outputs from key workflows still meet your quality bar. Prompt adjustments are likely needed for tasks that were tuned on Fable 5.
With no restoration timeline, now is a practical moment to consider whether high-stakes workflows should be tied to a single model at all.
