Key Points

  • The post compares M4 Max and M5 Pro on a 14-inch MacBook Pro with 64GB RAM for local LLM workflows (RAG and agentic systems) and asks for guidance on which to buy.
  • It highlights memory bandwidth: M4 Max ~546 GB/s versus M5 Pro ~307 GB/s, suggesting bandwidth could affect token throughput for local LLM tasks.
  • It notes that the M5 Pro has a 16-core Neural Engine, while there is no disclosed Neural Engine information for M4 devices, and Apple emphasized AI workflow improvements with the M5 line.
  • The decision hinges on whether bandwidth or Neural Engine/AI workflow features will most impact performance for local LLM work, and the post invites practical benchmarks and user experiences.

I’m considering purchasing a MacBook to tinker with and learn using LLMs for RAG and agentic systems. Only the 14inch fits in my budget.

M4 Max has higher memory bandwidth, at around 546GB/s, while M5 Pro has only 307Gb/s, which is going to significantly impact the speed of token/s. However, there’s no information on neural engine for M4 devices, but M5 Pro has a 16 core neural engine. Additionally, when M5 series of chips were announced, Apple mentioned a lot about AI workflows, improvements in prompt processing speed etc.

So, I’m now confused on whether I should opt for the M4 Max or M5 Pro!
