Updates for 6/14

Fable 5 went dark globally — a U.S. export order marks the first time a regulator has pulled a named frontier model. Fall back to Opus 4.8 now.

A · Theme of the day

A government pulled a named frontier model for the first time

U.S. export controls forced Fable 5 offline globally — a regulatory first.

Fable 5 shut down globally by export-control order

Claude (Anthropic)Claude (Anthropic)
What changed

U.S. export-control order forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers. Opus 4.8 and others remain; no restoration date set.

Compared to before

Fable 5 launched just 3-4 days ago as the first publicly available Mythos-class model, positioned as Anthropic's new flagship.

Why it matters

First time a regulator has individually pulled a specific frontier model. Any workflow built on Fable 5 is stalled until further notice.

What changed

U.S. export-control order required Anthropic to block Fable 5 for non-U.S. users; Anthropic applied it to all — the first named-model shutdown by a regulator.

Compared to before

Until now, export controls targeted chips or model weights before release — not a live API already in customers' hands.

Why it matters

Over-dependence on a single model can now be halted overnight by a political call. Multi-model strategy just became much harder to argue against.

B · Theme of the day

Workflows built on Fable 5 hit a wall overnight

If you moved to Fable 5 this week, you need a fallback plan today.

Fable 5 gone from all claude.ai plan tiers

ClaudeClaude
What changed

Model selector on claude.ai no longer shows Fable 5 or Mythos 5 for any plan. Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5 still available.

Compared to before

Since the June 9 launch, Max-plan users had started moving complex tasks onto Fable 5 expecting a quality step up over Opus 4.8.

Why it matters

If your workflow now depends on Fable 5, revert to Opus 4.8 for now. Light tasks? The gap is small enough you may not notice.

What changed

Developers who pinned claude-fable-5 are hitting 404. Fall back to Opus 4.8 via Anthropic's auto-route or by updating your model config manually.

Compared to before

Days after the June 9 launch, many devs had pinned claude-fable-5 and started offloading migration and code-refactor tasks onto it.

Why it matters

Cyber-research workflows that depended on Fable 5 are stalled with no timeline. Standard coding tasks work fine on Opus 4.8.
